Drawing Machine 3

Drawing Machine 2

Drawing Machine 1

My first completed drawing machine. It was re-built 3 times and this is the finished machine. The first 2 builds started to self destruct when turned on.

Mechanical Rocking Horse

Childhood frustrations with traditional rocking horses inspired this work. An adult sat on this work is the same scale as a child on a child’s rocking horse. It is powered by a petrol engine, which pushes a fifty-six pound weight back and forth under the seat. The rocking horse rocks higher and higher until eventually the runners skid.

Mechanical Sound Sculpture

This is built on a shortened range rover chassis. All the moving elements produce different industrial noises, combining to produce a discordant cacophony of sound.

Mechanical sound sculpture originally commissioned by Walk the plank for the Art Car parade in Blackpool in 2007. The piece was further developed and used in the closing ceremony of the 2012 Paralympics.

Mechanical Hammock

The structure for the hammock fabricated using an up-ended axle from a ten tonne wagon and a ¾ tonne anchor. A hand cranked gear system allows the user to rotate the hammock dependent on the position of the sun. The hammock itself made up from strips of salvaged ships rope bound together at each end.

This piece was commissioned for Kevin Mccloud’s Man Made Home series 2.

Mechanical money collector for Bristol Zoo

Mechanical money collector for Bristol Zoo. When coins are thrown into the bird bowl, the birds dip down causing the money to empty into the pond.

Beetle

Components for this piece include an airplane nose cone and plough discs. The Beetle was commissioned for Bristol Zoo in 2013 and is situated near the entrance to Bug world.

OX

The larger than life size Ox was commissioned by Persimmon Homes for Portishead redevelopment. The site was previously used for heavy industry, hence the use of the scrap digger components and other industrial salvage. If you push it's nose hard it's head and tail move up and down.

Dog

Dog made from reclaimed steel, one of a series of three. Primary component for this work was a hydraulic pump salvaged from a skip in an old boatyard.

Blaise Castle Dog

Dog commissioned for The Blaise Castle Estate by Bristol City Council. It is an interpretation of the two stone guard dogs, which sit either side of the entrance to the main house. The main components for this work were scrap digger parts.

St Paul’s Gateway Birds

Birds on posts commissioned by Bristol City Council as an entrance point to St Paul’s. All three birds made from reclaimed BSA motorbike fuel tanks.

Circus Bird

Circus Bird, when you turn the handle the ring moves back and forward as though the bird is moving in the ring.

This work was inspired by a small family run french circus show I saw in France. During the show a bird was brought out and walked around the inside of a ring.

Bird with nut bowl

Bird with nut bowl. As you turn the handle the bird dips down.

Flying fish

Flying fish kinetic sculpture. As you turn the wheel the fish move.

Sunbeam The Circus Dog

Dog made from recycled domestic appliances including a sunbeam food blender. When pushed along his head turns to look behind.

Calf

Calf made from reclaimed welded steel.

Jaco

Bird made from reclaimed welded steel with red leather strap from Jaco roller skates used for wings.

Dog On Wheels

Dog made from recycled plastic container and the fallopian tubes from a recycled anatomical model. When pushed along its head turns from side to side.

Gin Trap Beast

Animal made from recycled gin trap and manifold with steel wheels. When pushed along its head turns from side to side and mouth opens and closes.

Penguin

Penguin made from reclaimed metal, including small fire damaged fire extinguisher.

Vulture

Vulture body made from Kuplex lifting hook.

Kuplex BIrd

Bird made from reclaimed steel. Body made from Kuplex lifting hook.
One of a series.

Petroleum Lovebirds

Birds made from scrap petrol pump nozzles.

Fuelling Up

Singer Dog

Singer dog. When you spin the pulley wheel the dogs head turns from side to side.

Running Bird

Pointer

Made from reclaimed steel and wood. Head and tail move when pushed down.

Solid Fuel Steam Iron

Twigs placed in bottom of the Iron heat central water tank.  When water reaches boiling temperature, steam jets out from underneath. Made from reclaimed steel.

Solid Fuel Kettle

Twigs placed in firebox inside base of kettle and water poured into water jacket above. Flames passing through water jacket bring water to boiling point, which blows a whistle at the top. Made from reclaimed steel.
